& Organizations

Here are some of the major organizations in which PCMS students may choose to participate.

4-H Club Service club affiliated with the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.  In 4-H, youth learn life skills they will benefit from forever. Most 4-H programs center around three areas, leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Kelly Eubanks & Susan Miller

Junior Optimist Club Optimist Clubs are serious about "Bringing Out the Best in Kids" and do their part through community service programs.  Each Club is autonomous and run by members in their community, Optimists have the unique flexibility to serve the youth of their community in any way they see fit.  Optimist Clubs see a need in their community and react to it.  
  • Student members work with the Pickens County Animal Rescue
  • Student members work with the holiday “Can-A-Thon” as a service to the community

 

Youth Action Council

 

Service oriented club designed to promoted leadership among young people within the school setting. Student leadership development is the process of involving students in meaningful ways both in and beyond the classroom. It is providing opportunities for students to demonstrate their talents, skills, and interests while continuing to develop new skills. It is also about giving students more ownership of the programs they attend. Dr. Chris LeMieux
  • Student club members sponsored and coordinate a school dance to benefit the Empty Stocking Fund and a canned food drive for the holiday season
  • Students raised money to benefit cancer patients
  • Students meet and discuss the operations of the student body
  • Students sponsored and coordinated a school talent show

 

Future Farmers of America (FFA)

 

A service oriented club designed to promote careers in agriculture.  
  • Barnyard Olympics
  • Toys for Tots dance before Christmas Break
  • Participation in career development events, leadership and community service activities and supervised agriculture experience programs

 

First Lego League (Robotics)

 

To train students in applied engineering, programming, physics and mathematical concepts. Courtney Smith
  • Auditioned club
  • Students participate on teams that build and program robots
  • Students compete on obstacle course at regional and state competitions.
  • World wide teams from 13 countries

 

Reading Bowl Team

 

Students read Georgia Book Awards Nominees (20 books of fiction) and compete in Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. Karen Gurty

Leo Club

 

 

The acronym, Leadership, Experience, Opportunity, brought together the PCMS LEO Club.  PCMS LEOs developed from the idea of providing a great way to become involved in the community as well as serve as leaders to peers and make friends. Community service remains the cornerstone of our program. Like our Lion counterparts, PCMS LEO club members enjoy serving their neighbors and focusing on membership growth and expansion.

Math Dragons

PCMS

 

Students compete in selected math competitions such as the Berry College Math Competition. Carrie Stephens
  • Students travel to Berry College to compete against other schools.
  • The team consists of eight students.
  • Students are recommended by their math teacher

 

Chess Team

 

Students are encouraged to attend and learn how to play chess. Students learn how to improve their chess game by being exposed to different game strategies.

 

Lynne Hope
  • The Chess Club meets before and after school on designated days during the school year.

Art Club

 

Students are instructed in different techniques and mediums of art. Students are encouraged to attempt the different modalities of art presentation during club time.

 

 
  • The Art Club meets after school throughout the school year. These dates are announced ahead of time to the students.

Dragon News Network

 

DNN students learn how to use video and audio technology to televise their reports to the entire school each morning during homeroom. Courtney Smith
  • The DNN team is comprised of students who report each school day on local school news for the student body.

Yearbook Team

 

Students learn how to use photography, editing, and writing skills to produce a quality yearbook for the entire school. Courtney Smith
  • The Yearbook Staff is comprised of students who help the yearbook sponsor assemble the school's yearbook for the year.
  • The Yearbook Staff meets on a regular basis before and after school, as well as during the Language Arts Enrichment class.
